Description

The first Vanguard made its maiden flight on 20th January 1959, and BEA ordered 20 of the V951 model fitted with Tyne R.Ty.l engines. The first of these entered service in 1961 to start replacing Viscounts on many of the short-haul high density European routes.

In the event BEA only accepted six of these aircraft, having the remainder delivered as V953 Vanguards IIs fitted with improved Tyne R.Ty.lIs, The double-bubble fuselage of the Vanguard allowed considerable freight to be carried below the passenger deck, and later on some Vanguards were converted for use with BEA and British Airways solely as freighters, this type was known as the Merchantman.

A super detailed 1:24 scale model of the legendary ground attack Hawker Typhoon Mk. Ib. This fantastic model has been created using Airfixs advanced CAD design used on all new Airfix models, and we think you’ll agree the results are stunning!

Introduced into service in 1941, the Hawker Typhoon was designed to be the RAFs new ultimate interceptor fighter. Superseding the Hawker Hurricane it was hoped that the Typhoon, together with the Spitfire, would be a powerful and effective opponent of the Luftwaffe. However, it was not to be. Initially plagued by mechanical woes from the engine and suffering from a deficit in performance at high altitude, the Typhoon instead found fame as a low level attack aircraft, a role to which it was both well-suited and hugely effective.

These early machines were somewhat rushed into service and it was discovered that a number of modifications would be desirable, if not totally essential. Perhaps the most noticeable difference from the later models were around the canopy area – the first Typhoons were supplied with a forward opening ‘car door’ style cockpit entry for the pilot which even included a wind down window. The pilot also had a transparent roof panel, which hinged open to the left and some machines had the addition of a rear-facing mirror, on the canopy frame.

Some of the other options this new version will allow are:

  • The new ‘car door’ style canopy structure
  • Earlier ‘car door’ pilots seat
  • Alternative main undercarriage wheel
  • Pneumatic tail wheel
  • Alternate cannon fairings for the guns
  • Different internal frame structure
  • 500Ib ‘Long Tail’ bombs

  • Livery A: R7752 PR-G, Roland Beamont, 609 Squadron Manston 1943
  • Livery B: RB781 SA-H 486 Squadron
  • Livery C: EK270 EL-X 181 Squadron
  • Livery D: JP671 XP-R 174 Squadron

In addition, this new version of the 1/24th scale Hawker Typhoon will give the modeller the option to construct his model with or without the main aerial in place, with a similar option for the pilots optional rear-facing mirror.

The 17 Pounder was the largest of three anti-tank guns used by the British Army in the Second World War. Design work on the 17 Pounder began in April 1941 with the aim of replacing existing anti-tank guns. First deliveries of the new gun were made to Royal Artillery units in August 1942 and this type first saw action at the Battle of Medenine, North Africa, on 6 March 1943. The 17 Pounder was widely used in Italy and northern Europe and continued into post-war service for many years. Its use extended to being employed as a field gun, its high explosive shell proving a particularly useful charge in this role.

The Crusader Tank was one of the primary weapons of the British Army during its early engagements with the Germans during the Second World War. While early variants fought in the campaigns in France and then Greece, the Mk.III Crusader proved itself to be invaluable during the desert in North Africa where, in the vast expanses of the desert speed was a vital factor in tank engagements.

The highly mobile cruiser tank had this in plentiful supply, and with larger 6 pounder gun fitted to the Crusader Mk.III, it was able to pack a punch to match the early Panzer III and IV tanks it faced in combat. But as the German tanks increased their armour protection and firepower, especially with the introduction of the Tiger in 1943, the Crusader began to fall behind and was replaced by the lend-lease tanks such as the M3 Grant and M4 Sherman as soon as they became available. The chassis however continued to see service as an AA tank up until the wars end; its reliability and pace proving to be useful assets once more in this role.
