Authentic 1:43 Erebus Penrite Racing #9 David Reynolds / Luke Youlden Holden VF Commodore 2017 Sandown 500
The Sandown 500 ‘Retro Round’ has fast become one of the most popular racing events in the Supercars Championship with teams and personalities up and down pit lane celebrating motorsport history in a range of ways. Erebus Penrite Racing have been one of the teams at the pointy end of joining these celebrations and adopting awesome retro themed liveries for their race cars and 2017 was no exception.
The #9 Holden VF Commodore traded in its familiar black and yellow colours for a red, white and blue livery which served as a tribute to Peter and Phil Brock winning the 1976 Sandown event in a Holden L34 Torana. The win marked Brock’s third Sandown enduro win and the second in a streak of seven that ran from 1975 to 1981.
Authentic Collectables 1/12 Holden VF Commodore #9 Penrite Bathurst Winner (2017) - Reynolds / Youlden Due 2nd Quarter 2018
A fan favourite team with David Reynolds in the seat and Betty at the helm, Erebus Motorsport proved that it’s not always the ‘big’ teams who win the great race in 2017.
Partnered with co-driver Luke Youlden, David Reynolds was on the pace all weekend in his Penrite backed Holden VF Commodore with a shootout lap of 2:04.2746 helping him to start on the front row next to pole sitter Scott McLaughlin.
Come Sunday morning, the nations eyes were on Mount Panorama with the #9 Commodore amongst the front-runners all day despite poor weather and a very wet track. As the common saying goes though, you have to be in it to win it and both Reynolds and Youlden put on a measured and excellent display of wet weather driving to ensure they were there to capitalise during the last laps of the race when the opportunity presented itself.
It was an action packed finish to the race. With just 16 laps to the checkered flag, Reynolds sat fourth on the final restart and capitalised on other drivers errors to launch himself into into the top spot to take out the Peter Brock Trophy and mantel of being the 2017 Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 winners - the first Bathurst 1000 victory for both drivers and the team along with the team’s first win since their switch to Holden in 2016.
Reynolds was obviously ecstatic with the victory and duly celebrated on the podium with a ‘shoey’ “It feels really, really good. As a team we have worked extremely hard over the last year and a half to get to this point, it’s been a massive whirlwind experience. I owe everything to Betty, Barry and Al, it’s not just Luke and I, there’s an entire team of talented people behind us. Since we rolled the car out on Thursday it has been fast. We didn’t have the best pace in the wet but as the track dried out we had heaps of grip out there and it all switched on.”

“Pete and Sandown just had something with each other and if he finished he won; that year we won by two laps and it really shocked a lot of people, it was pretty special,” Phil Brock said. “Personally, I had not driven with my brother before and when he went out by himself that year he asked if I would drive with him in the endurance races which I was very happy to do. Pete really wanted to do his own thing so he started up Team Brock, and being Aussie’s the natural thing was the Australian flag, hence the car being red, white and blue.”
With an impressive livery locked away and Luke Youlden joining David Reynolds as Co-driver for Sandown and the endurance season, Erebus started the weekend really well with milestone results for the team that couldn’t actually be counted as milestones! Reynolds topped Saturday morning’s qualifying session, the first time he has done so with Erebus, which switched to Holdens when he joined in 2016. Then Co-driver Luke Youlden converted that pole position into victory in the opening ARMOR ALL Race for the Grid, also the first time an Erebus Holden has greeted the chequered flag first in a race. However, the unusual Sandown qualifying format meant that neither results would enter the record books on that basis, with the pair starting third on Sunday due to Reynolds’ finish in the second sprint behind Cameron Waters and Scott McLaughlin.
Despite the strong Saturday performances, unfortunately the 2017 chapter of the Sandown 500 would see Erebus finish in 17th position. However, history will show that Sandown was a great warm up for the team leading into the Bathurst 1000 and the retro livery was an absolute standout.

The BMW M3 E46 had the heavy burden of succeeding the iconic E30 and E36 that had given the Motorsport blazon its noble colours. This new generation would present itself as a Grand Touring coupé with a purified and balanced aesthetic. It would be on the M3 version that the wings would be widened, and the bonnet would be made of aluminium with several indentations to fit the 6 cylinder 24 valve engine in. Its 343 hp would allow the M3 to do 0 to 100 in barely 5,2 seconds. Still today this generation of BMW is, in the eyes of the collector, a must-have.
