The H.M.S. Endeavour was launched in 1765. She was prepared three
years later for a voyage under the command of Captain James Cook.
Australia was than discovered and Tahiti and numerous islands sighted.
She returned to England in 1771 bringing back all kinds of animals and
vegetables unknown in Europe.
Captain Cooks 1768-1771 voyage in HMS
Endeavour is considered to be of historical importance because she
contributed a great wealth of Navigation, Seamanship, Exploration, and
Geography to the worlds knowledge.
During this voyage Captain Cook
was the first captain to calculate longitudinal position with greater
accuracy using a mathematical formula developed in the 1760s.
Cook is
also the first to reduce scurvy among his crew, a serious and sometimes
fatal result of dietary deficiency on long voyages.
Before making
history in the service of the British Navy the HMS Endeavour, under the
name Earl of Pembroke was a merchant vessel carrying coal from England
to Scandinavia.
Before setting off in 1768 the HMS Endeavour was
drastically refitted, relining her hull, replacing her masts and adding
armaments.
More recently there is speculation that the HMS Endeavour
met her end off the coast of Rhode Island in 1778.
The HMS Endeavour
was renamed to Lord Sandwich and returned to merchant service
transporting coal after her historic voyage in the South Pacific. A ship
named Lord Sandwich was intentionally sunk in Newport Harbor in 1778.

The Winged Legends of the 1969 Grand Prix Championship. Sir Jack Brabhams race team built the Brabham BT26A/2 and was one of the first to experiment with aircraft-inspired wings to create increased downforce. The Scalextric version models the No.8 car raced by Jack Brabham in the International Trophy race at Silverstone, March 30th, 1969. Non-Championship races were often used to test developments on Grand Prix cars and in these early months of 1969 the negatives were yet to outweigh the positive aspects of high mounted aero-wings as the Lotus 49B cars would discover at the Spanish Grand Prix. Bruce McLaren, fellow Antipodean and friend of Brabham, was also running a high wing on his McLaren M7C No.6 car at the Spanish Grand Prix of 1969. During the race boh Lotus 49B cars driven by Graham Hill and Jochen Rindt crashed heavily after the high wings failed. The potential for these wings to fail with a high risk of injury to drivers and spectators was of grave concern and after just a few brief months of an exciting innovative development, such wings were banned by the FIA authorities. Bruce McLaren fininshed in 2nd place behind Stewart and ahead of Beltoise, Hulme and Surtees - the only drivers to finish the race!

In the 1967 Trans Am season, Allan Mann’s win at the non-championship Watkins Glen Manufacturers Challenge in a privateer Mustang convinced Mercury, owned by Ford, competitions boss Fran Hernandez that he was capable against such drivers as Mark Donohue, Jerry Titus and Parnelli Jones. Allan successfully tested for Bud Moore Engineering who was contracted to run the Mercury race team. Team cars were painted red and silver, but in deference to Allan’s Aussie background, his Cougar was green and gold. Moffat competed in the Modesto, California, Mission Bell 250 at Riverside, Las Vegas 350 and the Kent 300 in Washington. The Cougars lost the title to Mustang. The Cougar racing effort was terminated and Bud Moore went back to fielding NASCARs. Not surprisingly, Ford didn’t like the idea of spending a lot of money trying to beat itself! Even so, the Mercury Cougar is a highly respected and loved American muscle car.
