A brief history of diecast cars
For almost as long as we’ve had motorcars, we’ve had diecast cars too. Toy retailers who produced model railway sets saw the need to provide kids with a miniature working version of cars just as they had with trains.
So by the beginning of the 20th century, a burgeoning diecast model car industry was underway. In the decades since, diecast cars have risen and fallen in popularity with the diecast car boom arriving in the post-war decades of the 1950s and 60s.
During the 70s and 80s, the popularity of diecast cars declined but in the mid-90s, Mattel who had purchased synonymous diecast car brand “Matchbox” rebranded Matchbox cars as Hot Wheels and diecast cars experienced a renaissance, booming once more in popularity.
Today, diecast car manufacturers compete to bring out more and more detailed and realistic cars and collectors still clamour to get their hands on their favourite designs.
