FAQs about RC drones and quadcopters
Drones and quadcopters are reasonably new on the hobby scene. They’re growing in popularity and becoming more affordable by the minute, so naturally, we get a lot of questions about drones!
We’re experts when it comes to drones and quadcopters. Here are just a few of our most commonly asked questions:
Absolutely. Like any RC vehicle, drones and quadcopters require maintenance and care to maintain peak performance.
Premium drone brand, DJI, recommends the following care tips for your drone:
Complete a visual inspection. Check the outer shell for any damage, examine the propellers before and after each flight (make sure they’re not bent or cracked), and inspect the camera lens for dust, damage, or dirt
Ensure you’re using a fully charged battery. If the battery is idle for a long time, the drone’s performance may be impacted. Be sure to keep an eye on the drone app for battery alerts in flight, and avoid charging the batteries right after a flight because the batteries might be too hot.
Ensure your battery doesn’t get wet. This could lead to permanent drone damage
Fully charge and discharge your battery every three months to maintain battery health Check the charger and cables for damage on a regular basis. Damaged cables could prevent your batteries from fully charging
Store the battery in a specified transportation box/bag before travelling to avoid damage. Do not pack your battery with metal objects
Remove batteries from the aircraft if in storage for a long time. This will prevent any leakages
If you’re travelling a long way with your drone, recalibrate your compass Store the aircraft in a dry, cool and non-magnetic place to avoid any damage.
According to the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA), if you fly a drone for business or as part of your job, you must register before you fly. This applies to all drones to provide any kind of service - no matter how much the drone weighs.
Professional photographers, we’re looking at you!
Luckily, registration with CASA is free, can be completed online, and lasts for 12 months. Click here to register your business drone with CASA. If you’re simply using your drone for recreation or sport, you do not need to register your drone.
You must not fly your drone higher than 120 metres above the ground
You must keep your drone at least 30 metres from other people
You can only fly one drone at a time
You must keep your drone in your visual line-of-sight. That means you must always be able to see your drone with your own eyes rather than through goggles or a screen
You must not fly over people, above people, or in high-populous areas
You must respect people’s privacy, which means no recording or photographing people without their consent
If your drone weighs more than 250 grams, you must fly at least 5.5 kilometres away from a controlled airport. However, you can fly within 5.5 kilometres from a helicopter pad so long as you move out of the way when there’s an aircraft nearby
You must only fly during the day and you must not fly through cloud or fog
You must not fly your drone near or over an area where emergency operations are underway. This includes bushfires, floods, police operations, and search and rescue
“Unsafe” flying is essentially any kind of flying that break’s CASA’s drone rules. For example, if a drone is flying too high, too close to people, flying at night or in unsafe weather conditions, flying too close to wildlife and marine life, or even taking photos of people without consent, it will be considered “unsafe flying”.
It’s important to follow CASA’s rules to keep the community safe, but also to avoid hefty fines. A fine of $1,110 can be issued per offence!
