Landing Craft Mechanized (LCM) are probably the most famous landing craft in history and are associated with the amphibious operations of the Allies in the Second World War, from Anzio to the beaches of Normandy. The LCM-3 version is certainly among the most successful and effectively used. The design was simple and linear but extremely rational. The large front loading ramp allowed for the rapid disembarkation of a fully armed infantry squad but also of a 30-ton Sherman medium tank.

The armor was very light to protect the diesel engine, which allowed the LCM to reach a maximum speed of 8 knots, and the crew necessary for navigation and close defense composed of four men. However, the load capacity and operational flexibility were significant and allowed the LCM-3 to carve out an important place in the military history of the twentieth century.
