The Republic P-47D Thunderbolt undoubtedly plays an important role in the history of military aviation. The single-seat, low-wing American fighter-bomber was characterized by the adoption of the powerful Pratt & Whitney R-2800 radial engine of over 2,000 HP which allowed it to reach significant speeds especially at higher altitudes and to guarantee extraordinary operational flexibility. The P-47 was in fact effective both as a fighter, for escorting bombers, and as a lethal aircraft for ground support and ground attack missions. Extremely robust in its construction, it was heavily armed with eight 12.7 mm Browning M2 machine guns and could be equipped with bombs and rockets in order to increase its offensive capacity. It was successfully used by the United States, from 1943 onwards, on various operational fronts.
