Description

The Holden VR Commodore driven by Larry Perkins and Russell Ingall at the 1995 Bathurst 1000 was fastest in qualifying but was only able to manage 3rd position on the grid after the Top Ten Shootout. The start of the race was significant as Perkins tried to squeeze alongside pole sitter Craig Lowndes on the run to Hell Corner. The resulting contact sent Perkins to the pits with a deflated tyre, however, he was fortunate to return from the incident still on the same lap as the leaders.

On lap 133 the David Parsons Commodore had a suspension failure and hit the wall and the pace car was called out. This was the break Perkins needed! By lap 140 Perkins was only five seconds behind the leading Glenn Seton Falcon and then on lap 152 the unthinkable happened! Seton's Ford Falcon, which had been running strong with the front runners all day, was now slowing with a broken valve sprint. Larry Perkins stormed past Seton on lap 152 paving the way for his fifth Bathurst victory. The 1995 race will be remembered for the way that both Perkins and Ingall fought their way from last on the first lap to take the chequered flag at the finish.

Perkins and Ingall had become the first drivers in history to score a 'last to first' outright win in The Great Race.
